1. Urban ecology excursions in Berlin
The series "Urban ecology excursions in Berlin" provides a practical guide for excursions to projects in the field of urban conservation and ecology. As well as describing each project in detail, there is a general introduction to the topic in question, points of contact are given and there are suggestions on how to reach locations by public transport.

The excursion guide begins with a brief summary of
current discussions on energy in Berlin and with an
introduction to regenerative and rational energy
production technology. 15 innovative Berlin projects are
described which, each in their own way, have faced the
energy question and have found different means of
implementing ecologically compatible technologies.

This guide to excursions describes the relevance,

and the links between ecological construction and its

New sustainable settlements
What are the trends in new sustainable settlements?
This was the focus of a series of lectures which the
Academy held in 1993. Well-known urban planners and
architects presented praxis-oriented experience, ideas
and suggested action. Amongst specific topics were:
criteria for an ecologically sound city; involving
tenants; human ecology; car free planning; strategies for
large housing estates; examples of urban planning
concepts.

Sustainable Urban Development and Transport Strategies in Budapest
This work gives a general survey of the current
situation in urban development, traffic and transport
policies in Central European cities; using Budapest as an
example, it examines in depth resultant problem areas;

role of public transport and participation of the public
in traffic planning.

Environment, Traffic and Urban Planning

Redevelopment of Derelict Land in Europe
This volume presents experience in traditional EU

Designing Ecological Settlements
The handbook is the result of a three-year long
project, in the course of which studies were made of
sustainable new and urban renewal projects, plus analysis
with a view to establishing fundamental principles of
sustainable building technology. The study is divided

techniques, healthy building and aesthetics. It includes

A future for large housing estates
European strategies for prefabricated
housing estates in central and eastern Europe
In central and eastern Europe 34 million people live
in large pre-fabricated housing estates. Amongst the most
urgent tasks confronting for urban planning and the
housing industry is without doubt that of maintaining
this significant housing stock, of ensuring social
stability and further developing the estates in the town
planning sphere. The frequently catastrophic physical and
ecological conditions of buildings and of technical
infrastructure systems, as well as the first
repercussions of political, economic and societal changes
for the social situation in these estates call for
immediate action. This publication provides an
overview of the situation in central and eastern Europe,
highlights developments and approaches to solutions as
found in western Europe and also presents strategies
adopted in Berlin, a unique city in that it can point to
experience in the further development of large housing
estates of both western and eastern provenance.

Urban transport in central and eastern Europe
Policy handbook
The handbook gives an overview of innovative measures
and concepts in urban traffic, particularly in central
and eastern European municipalities. Parking management,
public transport and road safety for pedestrians and
cyclists are the selected fields to provide an insight
into the current situation in these cities. Moreover, a
survey was conducted in 14 central and eastern European
municipalities to analyse trends and tendencies on these
issues. Based on these results further steps to improve
and develop concepts in the selected fields of action are
introduced.

Transitional labour markets as a new full
employment concept
This conference report provides an overview of the
concept of transitional labour markets and puts forward

Noise abatement in European towns and cities
Strategies, concepts and approachesfor
local noise policy
Noise pollution is one of the most severe
environmental problems confronting cities and towns. For
example, approx. 20% of urban inhabitants in the European
Union are exposed to noise at a critical level of 65
dB(A) and above. The effects of noise range from
disruption of physical and psychological well-being to
rapid increase in cardio-vascular disease. The aim of
this publication is to contribute towards overcoming the
hindrances and to help in the formation and development
of instruments in urban and traffic planning and to
establish, particularly at local level, integrated
approaches and concepts for noise abatement measures as
well as financing strategies to implement them.

The market for environmental goods and
services in central and eastern Europe offers attractive opportunities
for various types of cooperation. In conjunction with Landesbank

Meticulous planning, appropriate sizing and
installing treatment equipment – as well as conscientious operating
agencies – are absolutely imperative pre-requisites when using
non-potable (recycled or rain) water in buildings. The aim of a
conference – which the present volume documents – was therefore to
present primarily diverse and practical lessons learnt: in large,
multi-storied buildings, hotels, office buildings, schools and sport
locations, in trading and industrial buildings, in housing estates and

Urban Planning and Cultural Inclusion. Lessons from Berlin and Belfast
Cities divided by ethnic and cultural
conflict need to identify, create and maintain some kind of shared
identity amongst their inhabitants, if they wish to survive in
competition with one another and not be submerged in tensions. Urban
planning and city management can take these identities on board
constructively and can assist them without allowing the city to
deteriorate into a disconnected and hostile conglomeration. Drawing on Berlin and Belfast case study

Raising awareness in candidate countries for future EU noise policy
A primary objective of this publication is to provide information
for candidate countries on integration at national, regional and local

Putting in place market economy structures in central and eastern
European countries together with new political and legal framework
conditions have prepared the ground for economic growth and business
cooperation.
In view of immanent EU enlargement to the east, the market for
environmental protection products and services offers particularly for

opportunities for cooperation. With this in mind the Academy organised
a project involving two seminars in September 2000 and January/February

In Berlin - as well as in Polish towns and cities - new strategies
for best use, professional care, maintenance and planning of open and
green areas are required. During a conference on financing for urban
green areas, held in Berlin in October 2000, financing and management
strategies for green areas in Berlin and in Polish major cities were
presented and discussed. The results of the meeting are combined in
this volume.

A vision of car free cities in central and eastern Europe
The publication aims primarily to present, identify and discuss selected
cases, raising issues of how and where car use and dependency can be reduced,
and how such a vision can be achieved in a longer term perspective. In this
context it is of great importance to interrelate issues of the environment,
transport and urban development as, to date, these fields are still approached
separately, leading to unsatisfactory results. Thus the publication gives
politicians, experts and professionals at all levels in candidate countries
readily available information examples on how to coordinate better existing and
planned policies in these fields with a view to fostering sustainable mobility.
Furthermore, examples are presented of raising awareness among local inhabitants
for transport and land use related environmental problems, and how to
communicate better and address existing policies or those in the process of
execution, e.g. by means of the European Car Free Day.

Scientific, social and political discussion on the problems of sustainable
development is well advanced, and is extremely controversial in all three areas,
especially as regards theory. The publication deals with the conceptual
frameworks of the sustainability model in some of the relevant technical
disciplines, in particular in ecology, political science and economics. It
provides information about how these (or the other current conceptual
frameworks) have been received in jurisprudence and legal practice, in other
words how the sustainability precept has been transformed into law.

In all parts of Europe there are activities directed towards a Local Agenda
(LA) 21. What is at issue is not only environmental or ecological but also
cultural and social sustainability. Every single citizen - so the intention - is
to be involved in shaping a common future. Is it possible to integrate people
from diverse backgrounds into the LA 21 process? to find a common language? not
to mention common goals? or at least to accept their various differences? And if
so, what effects does this have for them, for their self-image, for their
identity - and thus for the city as a whole?. These questions were some being
looked into by participants from Belfast, Berlin and Dublin in December 2001.

Because of the high density of population and of buildings, as well as concentrations in commerce, traffic and transport, in particular cities suffer especially due to flood events. This conference report presents the background of anthropogenic factors which influence water bodies, and the relevant EU instrumentaria, as well as designs and measures in cities for flood protection: town planning and urban development spheres are challenged by these topics as are public awareness raising, regional and/or international cross-border cooperation within river basin districts.
At European (EU) level a number of new pioneering directives have recently been passed which will present a massive challenge in environmental policies specifically in the major European metropolises with effect from 2005, 2008 and 2010.In the context of the framework directive on air quality, three new daughter directives have come into force in which ambitious air quality goals have been stipulated. Concurrently, in the recent past the new European directive on environmental noise was adopted which - in addition to increased requirements concerning noise mapping - makes it compulsory in all larger conurbation to draw up noise abatement plans. The publication is discussing the prospects for (joint) implementation of both directives

Cultural diversity and difference is increasing in European cities, driven by economic integration, migration and EU enlargement.
