A number of these publications are also available on this site to be downloaded.Publications prior to this date are briefly described here (cp. below)1. Urban ecology excursions in BerlinThe series "Urban ecology excursions in Berlin" provides a practical guide for excursions to projects in the field of urban conservation and ecology. As well as describing each project in detail, there is a general introduction to the topic in question, points of contact are given and there are suggestions on how to reach locations by public transport. Energy / EnergieThe excursion guide begins with a brief summary of
current discussions on energy in Berlin and with an
introduction to regenerative and rational energy
production technology. 15 innovative Berlin projects are
described which, each in their own way, have faced the
energy question and have found different means of
implementing ecologically compatible technologies. GrünFollowing a brief survey of the importance and
historical development of 'green areas' in Berlin, and a
description of current concepts for the conservation
/preservation and encouragement of nature in the city,
under 15 topic headings 26 'green locations' in Berlin
are presented which on account of their ecological and
social significance can be considered as positive
examples of how to deal with nature in the city. WasserThis brochure begins with a general introduction to
problems of water supply and disposal and a description
of the particular situation in Berlin. There follow
details of innovative projects showing careful use of the
natural resource, water, and in practical examples how
Berlin - as opposed to the majority of conurbations
nowadays - is able to satisfy the city's drinking water
needs from its own resources. Bauen & WohnenThis guide to excursions describes the relevance,
goals and criteria for ecologically sensitive
construction and the historical development of ecological
urban renewal in Berlin. 14 excursion locations with
exemplary attempts at solutions are described. Overall
ecological concepts are presented, aspects of
environmentally friendly living and working are included,
and the links between ecological construction and its
social implications are underlined. 2. Studies and reportsNew sustainable settlementsWhat are the trends in new sustainable settlements?
This was the focus of a series of lectures which the
Academy held in 1993. Well-known urban planners and
architects presented praxis-oriented experience, ideas
and suggested action. Amongst specific topics were:
criteria for an ecologically sound city; involving
tenants; human ecology; car free planning; strategies for
large housing estates; examples of urban planning
concepts. Sustainable Urban Development and Transport Strategies in BudapestThis work gives a general survey of the current
situation in urban development, traffic and transport
policies in Central European cities; using Budapest as an
example, it examines in depth resultant problem areas;
describes the Budapest traffic and transport development
plan, highlights various forms of traffic management, the
role of public transport and participation of the public
in traffic planning. Environment, Traffic and Urban PlanningThe work deals with the stress area where the
environment, traffic and transport and town planning
meet. Topics include examples of mathematical model
simulation; integrated concepts in CO2 reduction;
environmental and health problems due to traffic;
disadvantaging of sections of the population as far as
mobility is concerned; cycling as a form of transport;
financing, organisation and privatisation of public
transport in Western European cities. New sustainable settlements in EuropeAll over Europe during the past few years,
ecologically sensitive building and housing projects have
been set up with the aim of minimising environmental
pollution. Using selected examples this study provides a
survey of experience and lessons learnt in the field of
energy and resource-saving new settlements and urban
renewal areas. The examples are also portrayed by means
of extensive diagrams and illustrations. Strategies of Development for Central European MetropolisesEspecially the Central European metropolises, in view
of their role as link between 'East' and 'West', need to
take account not only of their internal requirements, but
also of regional and supra-regional implications. The
work gives an over-view of medium and long term planning
in Central European capital cities.. Rational and regenerative energy use for the cities of the futureFinancial constraints and ecological considerations
are increasingly leading to administrative action and
energy policy concepts in European cities and towns which
can make a major contribution to reducing energy
consumption. The book presents a wide spectrum of local
government scope of action and of European
experience. Energiepolitische Ansätze zur CO2-Minderung im GebäudebereichIn addition to traffic and transport, buildings and
construction represent the most significant area for
local government action in reducing CO2. This volume
deals with constructional measures in new settlements and
urban renewal, instruments for positive administrative
action and concepts for urban public utilities to reduce
CO2 output Information Technology for the Town PlannerGraphic systems in particular are indispensable in
processing the mass of data, mainly spatial, which is
required in the planning process, but is also necessary
in order to communicate planning results to the general
public. In this volume experience gained in Central
European metropolises, primarily in the city of Vienna,
is described. Prospects for climate-oriented planning in European citiesThis volume presents new considerations for
climate-oriented town planning in Europe. Using selected
examples from European cities, climatologists,
meteorologists and town planners illustrate current
thinking on concepts and projects in climate-oriented
urban planning and construction, thus helping cities make
an active contribution to urban and global climate
protection by means of practical planning instruments and
tools. Environmentally Compatible Urban Transport and TrafficThis publication highlights recent and challenging
projects for environmentally compatible urban transport
and traffic with the following themes: use of telematics
in traffic and transport management, traffic reduction by
means of integrated concepts, attempts at traffic
avoidance through regional and urban developmental
planning, and alternative traffic and transport concepts
suited to the urban environment. Redevelopment of Derelict Land in EuropeThis volume presents experience in traditional EU
industrial locations, and provides general
recommendations for strategies in redevelopment of land.
In addition, specific examples of redevelopment in
Berlin, Riesa, Germany, and Catalonia are described. In
conclusion there is a brief survey of selected funding
programmes and of the situation in some Central and
Eastern European metropolises. Facing the Challenge - Successful climate policies in European citiesApproximately two-thirds of global energy consumption
is in cities, making them a focus of ecological
attention. Despite varying national framework conditions
cities have not only similar problems but also unique
opportunities. In this publication successful local
climate policies in Europe are presented under the
following headings: communication and consultation; local
energy production; buildings and public institutions;
industry and commerce; inner city traffic and transport;
integrated strategies. Environmentally Compatible Urban Transport and TrafficTo complement previous publications on the topic, this
volume considers exemplary European measures, for example
strategies in traffic reduction; financing of traffic
infrastructure plus traffic management; certain
telematics approaches are described. Restructuring of Derelict Industrial AreasRevitalising inner city derelict industrial and
commercial land as well as others is a task which is
increasingly complex. This volume presents strategies to
enable consolidation of industrial land and restructuring
of inner-city waste land, describes requirements and
concepts for the elaboration and implementation of
projects as well as selected examples especially in
central and eastern European towns and cities; it
concludes with a number of recommendations on dealing
with derelict areas. Urban Planning, Transport and the EnvironmentThis volume describes the situation of urban and
traffic planning in Sofia and some other Central and
Eastern European cities. In addition examples of good
practice in several European cities are presented. They
mainly deal with the following topics: trams and buses,
traffic management and financing strategies. Water-saving Strategies in Urban RenewalUsing a number of European cities as examples, this
volume looks at determining factors in inner-city water
consumption, presents possible technical and financial
approaches to solve supply and waste water disposal
problems; in addition, new strategies in the careful use
of resources in the process of urban renewal are
shown. Designing Ecological SettlementsThe handbook is the result of a three-year long
project, in the course of which studies were made of
sustainable new and urban renewal projects, plus analysis
with a view to establishing fundamental principles of
sustainable building technology. The study is divided
into sections on open spaces, water, energy, building
techniques, healthy building and aesthetics. It includes
specific practical recommendations and concludes with a
prospect for the future development of ecologically
sensitive building in Europe. Cooperation in the Water Industry in Central and Eastern EuropeThis publication depicts problems in municipal water
supply and waste water disposal, based on experience in
various towns or cities; technical as well as town
planning and administrative approaches to solving them,
especially in Berlin, are outlined. Environmental improvements in pre-fabricated housing estatesUsing examples from selected cities, this work
describes the current difficult situation in large
residential estates in Central and Eastern European towns
and cities; a number of structural, architectural and
town planning approaches to remedy this, in particular as
regards pre-fabricated housing blocks, are
highlighted. Auf der Suche nach neuer Mobilität - Autofreie Stadtquartiere in DeutschlandThis reader presents projects in German towns and
cities (Nuremberg, Bremen, Freiburg, Cologne, Berlin and
in North Rhine-Westphalia) for car-free or traffic-calmed
residential areas. There are summaries of discussions on
the topic from two meetings. Job creation in the environmental sector. Local employment initiatives in EuropeUsing case studies in the fields of recycling,
environmental technology, energy saving, landscaping,
environmental education and training, a number of labour
market policy programmes and projects in Barcelona,
Berlin, Glasgow, Strasbourg, Stockholm, Tampere and Graz
are described and evaluated. The book aims to encourage
municipal decision makers in their efforts to create new
jobs, in offering a tool for active employment policy in
the environmental field and in addition giving a
theory-based overview of prospects for local labour
market policy oriented to environmental concerns. A future for large housing estates
